Understanding your dive equipment makes you a safer, more confident diver. Here's what every piece does and whether you should buy or rent.

Buy First: Personal Fit Items

Mask ($40-150)

Your most important purchase. A poorly fitting mask ruins every dive. Try before you buy — press it against your face without the strap. It should stay in place with a gentle inhale.

Fins ($60-200)

Open-heel fins with booties for cold water, full-foot fins for warm water. Longer fins = more power, shorter fins = more maneuverability.

Wetsuit ($100-400)

• 3mm — Tropical waters (27°C+)
• 5mm — Warm temperate (20-27°C)
• 7mm — Cold water (below 20°C)

Dive Computer ($200-800)
